In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His being was essentially untarnished, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales through the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Tales of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my read more sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
